The soft species is approaching, I feel it in my strata,
I hear the rhythm of its essence
This essence is vibrant, agitated, elusive, and strong
It is well clothed
with fear inside,
and with plastic outside*
Corps roca takes us into Ileana Hernandez’s imaginary world, where she reverses perspectives on living things through a narrative situated within the fictional experience of a rock. It, the rock, observes us, the soft species. The strata of its ancient knowledge are confronted with the futility and frenzy of the soft species. It communicates by vibrations, warning that, without harmony and synchronicity, discord will prevail. Humans’ fragility and malleable consistency are tested as the rock calls out to us. Rather than listening to the knowledge embodied by our fellow being, we continue to extract, destroy, and overuse this solidification of experience. In the soundtrack for the work, Hernandez shares with us the wisdom of the rock, and through performative actions she invites us to communicate with it. And so, what would you say to the rock?

Her wish is that her body will feed an avocado tree when she dies.
